Writing Exercise
This prompt is designed to explore possibilities and notice what I’m drawn to by letting ideas surface without judging or limiting them. I’m giving myself room to picture a future that feels meaningful and true to me. This is not about what feels realistic, nor is it about getting it perfect. This is about what I want.
1. Set the Stage
Before writing, create an environment for your brain to imagine freely. Go somewhere relaxing and inspiring where you are not anticipating too many distractions. Whether you decide to write at home, in nature, or somewhere in public, ask yourself what elements will help make you feel comfortable. Consider your senses as you set the stage. Perhaps you'd like a hot tea, blanket, fan, etc.
Choose any date 3 years from now. It can be the start of the new year, your birthday, exactly 3 years from today, and so on. Now write the date on the top of the page.
Ask yourself: If things went really well, what would my life look like? Step into your future life and describe what you see.
2. Break Your Life Into Categories
Write a paragraph or more for each:
Lifestyle & home — where you live, what your days look like.
Relationships — romantic, family, friends, community.
Health — how you take care of yourself and how your body feels.
Fun & creativity — what brings you joy and excitement.
Money — what your financial life feels like.
Career & purpose — the work you’re doing and why it matters to you.
Mindset & emotional life — how you think, how you handle things.
3. Make it Specific and add Sensory Impact
Write in present tense.
Describe what you see, hear, feel, smell, touch.
Make it vivid enough that you can picture it. The more detail, the more your brain and body can experience it.
Example:
Don't just write “I have a good job.”
Take this sentence and add how it feels--how you experience it: “I work with people who inspire me. My work feels meaningful. I end each day proud of what I created.”
3. Write Without Censoring
Do not shrink your thoughts or demand they be realistic
Don’t worry about how it will happen--just write what you want.
4. Create a Narrative
Shape your ideas into a clear, flowing 2 or more page description of your future life.
By letting ideas surface without judging or limiting them, I want to thank myself for allowing room to explore possibilities and notice what I’m drawn to.
